About the Artist

Dana McClure lives and works out of a studio in Upstate New York. Her work spans a variety of media including collage, printmaking, textile design and the moving image. She has art directed print, motion, and interactive projects for commercial, non-profit, and cultural clients worldwide.

A 5-year long documentary film that Dana directed and co-produced, entitled 'Odd Ones Out,' won a Telly Award in 2008 and is distributed internationally. After ten years of teaching 2D Design and Time-Based Media at Parsons The New School for Design and New York University, Dana is currently focusing on self-initiated mixed-media work.

Alongside her husband, chef Chris Lanier, Dana runs a small flower and produce farm called Ravenwood which serves as inspiration for her artwork – much of which is explorations in floral abstraction. Homegrown blooms make their way into many of her compositions as photographs, paintings, collage materials and pressed petals. Much of this work is displayed in Ravenwood's seasonal barn space that aims to inspire creative exchange around the integration of farming/food and art/design.

About the Work

The focus of my work is on developing a visual language that results from a subconscious response to informed decision making. My process often begins with a strict set of rules or parameters to guide the work. These limitations could be based on materials, scale, color or a specific type of imagery that suggests a certain narrative. From here, I work to deconstruct, transform and challenge this original structure through the process of collage, painting, printmaking and digital manipulation. Utilizing these mediums in an intuitive and responsive way, leads to new discoveries and endless variations in form. With these methods that allow for an immediate and instinctive reaction to each phase of the process.
